Dhaka Gladiators win the first version of Bangladesh Premier League by beating Barisal Burners. The final match of the BPL T20 tournament was played at Sher-e-Bangla Cricket Stadium Mirpur. Batting first, Barisal Burners scored 140 with Brad Hodge being the highest scorer. He made 70. Shahid Afridi took 3 handy wickets and restricted Burners from doing any further damage.
Gladiators’ start was solid with Imran Nazir dominating the bowlers and hitting boundaries all over the park. He made 75 off 43 with 6 huge sixes and same number of boundaries till Allaudin Babu managed to dismiss him. The local boy Anamul Haque’s 49 was also a supportive inning. Gladiators reached the target with 26 balls remaining. Imran Nazir was given the player of the match while Sakib al Hasan took the player of the series prize of a brand new Honda Civic.
The 19 days event consisted of 33 matches including the semifinals and the final contest. A total 6 teams played against each other at least twice to reach the semifinals. Each team was led by a Bangladeshi player who were given the “icon” title. The rest of the team had several national and international players. Pakistan had the second most cricketers playing for different teams including the Boom Boom Afridi and dusra specialist Saeed Ajmal.
It was a overall a great event with some serious cricketing action. It was the first time Bangladesh hosted such an event but the management and sponsors did a great job to make the grand event successful. The second version of Bangladesh Premier League will be played in 2013.
